What to check before you commit to a monthly plan
A cheaper headline price isn't always the better deal once contract length, coverage and add-ons are accounted for. Here's what we walk through with every caller.
1. Your real data use
Check your current phone's data usage in settings before you call. It's the single best number for working out whether you need 5GB or 50GB.
2. Coverage at your postcode
Network strength differs street by street. If you have patchy signal now, it's worth mentioning so we can flag it before you switch.
3. Contract length
Rolling plans cost more per month but let you leave any time. Fixed terms are cheaper but tie you in — know which trade-off you're making.
4. Early exit and cancellation terms
Ask what you'd owe if you needed to leave early. Some providers charge the remaining line rental in full; others reduce it.
5. Roaming and international use
If you travel, check what's included for EU or worldwide roaming and whether there's a daily charge outside included zones.
6. Price after any introductory period
Some deals include a lower rate for the first few months. Always ask what the ongoing monthly price will be for the rest of the term.
Mid-contract price increases
Several UK mobile providers apply an annual price rise part-way through a fixed contract, often linked to inflation plus a fixed percentage. This is usually disclosed in the terms at sign-up. It's worth asking directly whether a plan includes this before you commit, so the monthly figure you're comparing is the one you'll actually be paying in month twelve.
