Plan types
Understanding the shape of a monthly mobile plan
Before comparing specific numbers, it helps to know which category of plan you're actually looking at. Here's a plain-English rundown of the main types on the UK market.
- SIM-only, rolling monthly
- No fixed end date — you can leave with roughly 30 days' notice. Good for testing a network or avoiding a long commitment, though the monthly price is sometimes a little higher than a 12-month equivalent.
- SIM-only, 12-month term
- A fixed contract length in exchange for a lower monthly price than the rolling equivalent. You'll typically owe the remaining months if you cancel early.
- Pay-monthly with a handset
- Device and airtime combined into a single bill, usually over 24 months. Once the contract ends, the price often doesn't drop automatically — it's worth checking your bill at that point and re-shopping.
- Family and multi-SIM plans
- Multiple lines under one account. Some providers offer a discount per additional line or a shared data pool; others simply bill each line separately under one login.
- Data-heavy and unlimited plans
- Designed for streaming, navigation and tethering. "Unlimited" plans can still carry a fair-use policy that slows speeds after a very high threshold — worth asking about explicitly.
- Budget and light-use plans
- Smaller data allowances, often under 5GB, aimed at people who are mostly connected to Wi-Fi. Usually the cheapest way to keep a number active.
- PAYG (pay as you go)
- No monthly commitment at all — you top up credit as needed. Suits very occasional use, though the per-minute or per-MB cost is usually higher than a monthly bundle.
- eSIM plans
- A digital SIM profile instead of a physical card, useful for dual-SIM phones or quick switching. Availability depends on both the plan and your handset supporting eSIM.
